The following story features the work of Brother Sean DiFiglia CFC of LAMA in Neuevo Horizontes.
Since its inception in 2019, the Alcanzando Nuevos Horizontes project has dramatically improved the educational environment at the I.E. 88413, an elementary school in Nuevo Chimbote, Peru. In collaboration with the Congregation of Christian Brothers, this initiative has introduced psychological support, social work services, tutoring, and arts and computer classes. These services have not only made the school a standout in the community but have also impacted the lives of teachers, students and their families.
Twelve-year-old Claudia is one such student whose life has been transformed by this project. Living with her mother, stepfather, and three siblings in a state of extreme poverty, Claudia faced many struggles. Her stepfather’s income as a mototaxi driver was not enough to cover basic needs, and her mother was unemployed. Claudia often couldn’t afford school supplies, and as a result, she frequently missed classes and struggled to keep up with her studies.
Despite her desire to learn, her difficult financial situation weighed heavily on her. In 2023, things came to a head when Claudia, unable to participate in the fiestas patrias activities due to her financial limitations, spiraled into feelings of hopelessness. Her situation was quickly identified by the school’s social worker and psychologist, and immediate intervention was provided.
Through the support of Alcanzando Nuevos Horizontes, Claudia and her family received much-needed assistance. She began attending the project’s tutoring sessions, where she received academic support and developed study habits that helped her catch up on her schoolwork.
With renewed motivation and a structured approach to her studies, Claudia’s grades began to improve. She no longer missed classes and even took on the role of helping another vulnerable students with their homework. By the end of the school year, Claudia had not only recovered academically but had also participated in the school’s Día del Logro event, presenting a scientific experiment she had worked on. Her confidence and dedication were evident to both her teachers and her peers.
Claudia’s teacher praised her progress, highlighting her perseverance and ability to make the most of the support she received. Though challenges remain, Claudia’s resilience and the ongoing assistance from the project give her a promising path forward. She is determined to continue her education and seize the opportunities that lie ahead, inspired by the care and commitment of those around her.
Claudia’s story is just one example of how Alcanzando Nuevos Horizontes is changing lives in Chimbote, offering hope and tangible support to children in need. Through its holistic approach, the program is not only helping students excel academically but is also fostering personal growth and resilience.
