November 15, 2024 – Edmund Rice Schools Network inspired by the vision of their founder and the ongoing commitment to social justice, are proud to announce the launch of a global campaign to tackle homelessness and advocate for the rights of vulnerable individuals. This campaign, in partnership with the Westcourt Centre in Belfast Ireland, and a project of the Edmund Rice International Advocacy Program, will unite students, educators, and communities across the world in a shared mission to address one of society’s most urgent challenges.
Under the banner “Still Somebody” the campaign seeks to raise awareness, foster empathy, and inspire meaningful action to support those experiencing homelessness. The initiative emphasizes collaboration, education, and advocacy, focusing on both short-term relief efforts and long-term solutions.
“Edmund Rice Schools have a rich tradition of service and a deep commitment to making a difference in the world,” said Dr. Sean D’Alfonso, Director of Advocacy for the North American Edmund Rice Christian Brothers. “With this campaign, we aim to educate our students about the root causes of homelessness and empower them to be agents of change in their local and global communities.”
Key Components of the Campaign:
- Educational Resources: Schools have access to a website filled with resources to launch their campaign. Still Somebody
- Community Outreach and Service Projects: Students will engage in projects such as providing meals, distributing care packages, and volunteering at shelters.
- Advocacy and Awareness Events: From sleep outs to marches to community talks, schools will host events to amplify the voices of those affected and call for policy changes.
- Global Collaboration: Edmund Rice Schools across different continents will share spend the week in solidarity with one another in the work of advocating for those who are unhoused or seeking shelter.
The campaign encourages students to not only offer immediate support but also advocate for sustainable housing solutions and policies that protect the most vulnerable. By partnering with local organizations and government agencies, Edmund Rice Schools aim to create lasting change.
“This initiative is about more than charity—it’s about justice,” said Cormac McArt, Director of the Westcourt Centre in Belfast Ireland. “We believe in a world where everyone deserves a place to call home, and students are ready to lead this change.”
How to Get Involved: Members of the public, local businesses, and community groups are invited to join the movement. Whether through volunteering, donations, or advocacy efforts, everyone has a role to play in creating a world free from homelessness.
