Advocating for Those Experiencing Homelessness

From December 5-11, the Edmund Rice Youth Ambassadors held a Homelessness Awareness Week in conjunction with our Edmund Rice school partners in Northern Ireland. Through this campaign, ERCBNA schools worked on advocacy and outreach projects related to homelessness. Please see some of their projects below:

Students at Brother Rice also continued their great tradition of the Marian Souper Bowl event at Marian High School. This year was the 15th annual event, which raised funds to help Nativity of the Lord Parish and Food Pantry in Detroit.

Catholic Memorial’s Brothers United Against Homelessness event brought together students who prepared more than 300 care packages for the Pine Street Inn, a Boston non-profit that provides housing, shelter, job training & outreach to Boston's most vulnerable who are experiencing homelessness.

Tampa Catholic High School students volunteer at Tampa Hope. This community is a diocesan initiative with wrap around services to support local men and women in becoming independent and empowered. The services include but are not limited to 3 square meals daily, transportation assistance, a clothing closet, laundry facilities, medical interventions, education programs, job placement, as well as temporary and long-term housing solutions. Our students have built pallets for temporary housing, assisted with the client intake process, worked the food line, supported the recreation area, planted for property beautification efforts, helped with campus clean up, decorated for holidays, and visited with residents. We pray this partnership is mutually fruitful for years to come!

Brother Rice, Chicago (Mike Dolan)

Students at Brother Rice Chicago participated in a number of activities to raise awareness by increasing public recognition, challenging stereotypes & highlighting organizations working to end homelessness. Senior Advocacy Leaders and other students worked together throughout the week to raise awareness of the issue of homelessness in the city of Chicago, and created lunches for those experiencing homelessness, which were donated to a local shelter.
