Beatification of Blessed Edmund Rice
When Edmund Rice opened his first mission in a Waterford (Ireland) stable in 1802, he set out to feed, clothe and educate the poor and marginalized of his day. He did so during what were bleak and chaotic times for the Irish populace. Edmund’s message was one of hope for a better future for a new generation of Irish youth.

This mural was first inspired in Rome where Bernard McDonagh executed his first fresco commission while on an Art Scholarship there. During that period he executed commissions in the Irish Embassy to the Vatican, the Irish College and St. Patrick's. It was then that Fr. Griffin, a student at the North American College in Rome, was attracted to the work of this artist, and discussed with him the prospects of arranging a commission for him in the United States at some future date.
